boomrang update noise?

I've been experiencing some static-like crackling intermittently with my
upgraded boomerang (I bought the chip & installed it myself). Usually
happens when it's first powered up, on the first loop I'll hear lots of
static crackling in the playback. Then when I wipe that loop and do 
another,
no more noise. Anyone else had this happen--any ideas?
