strange question/Japanese gear

I have an odd question.  Does anyone know what sort of power conversion 
problems there might be between gear sold in Japan that will be used in 
the United States?  Is it feasible to buy a used bit of gear from Japan 
and expect to plug it in and go fine in here?  I don't really know much 
about how electricity is regulated/distributed around the world.  Stupid 
question or legitimate ask?  You decide.
