You all might want to look at Japanese tabi boots (or ninja boots as the
martial arts stores will tell you).  They're basically cloth 'boots'
with a big toe split from the other toes and flat rubber soles.  Light,
comfy, and sensitive enough to hit small switches while standing on one
foot in the dark.
