RE: All-Laptop live?? (was RE: RE: A poll--shoes off?)

There are hundreds of choices. My #1 choice would be a commercial
notebook with an Intel mobile Centrino processor and 1gig of RAM. To
find a commercial box from manufacturer, you'll need to go and buy it
directly from their site, not a retail store (physical or online). For
example, either IBM or Hewlett-Packard make high end commercial
notebooks that they use themselves for their own employees. They will
come loaded with XP Professional. The commercial notebooks are more
robust and reliable than consumer notebooks...but a little more
expensive. I say this because I'm considering a new notebook, and I
have a consumer version. I would never buy a consumer laptop again,
personally. And my wife works for Intel, and knows the scoop on what
companies use what processors in their notebooks, what have a good
reputation, etc. But, again, there are many commercial notebooks that
would be fine. The processor is the key. On ProTools and mBox, for
instance, I've major latency discrepancies between cheaper notebooks
with lower end processors and more expensive notebook with higher end
processors. With PC notebooks, you can't ignore the type of processor,
whether AMD, Intel, or all the subsets of processor types within these.
They each have their different function or purpose, and performance
behavior. Basically you pay for what you get. If you buy a computer
online and you have the option to do a custom configuration (which you
can usually do), don't cut corners on the processor. That will manifest
itself in your musical software performance.

With all the talk of programs, does anyone have any spec
recommendations for a PC laptop capable of live looping, and running a
few softsynths at once?
