If you're thinking of going the distortion -> filter route, how about
the moog lowpass filter pedal?  though im not sure about the price..

then there is also the  Frostwave Resonator
http://www.frostwave.com/theresonator/index.html

Both of these you can plug a control pedal into, or add some extra
things like LFO's to get some animation in the filter sound...
