Yes I have opened one my units some time ago just because of the same 
symptoms (the rattling thing inside was a screw from the digital 
interface connector).
I remember it was no fun.
Tried the same thing with my rattling PHLNGR right now - and didn't 
manage to open it entirely. So I opened it so far that it wouldn't break 
and shaked it - and there was the screw ;-)
As the interface connector is also soldered on the board, the missing 
screw shouldn't cause any problems - I closed the unit again without 
trying any longer.

Maybe you have to unscrew the analog audio connectors, too, to get into 
the unit....
