Well, there is actually a logical application for that, if he wants to
work with multi tap delay and have better control over each delay line
than you get with the classic tape delay machines.

And I definitely see an interesting opening for the harmonizer in that
context - but I agree with you that The Edge rarely has been heard
playing harmonizer pitched sounds... So maybe he uses the harmonizer
for a chorus effect?

Multi tap delay is very cool, I think. Some software plug-ins that do
that are Augustus Loop, PSP 608 Multidelay and Apple Logic's Delay
Designer. The Delay Designer is fun because it lets you tap in the
different delay lines' delay time in real-time, if you want. And those
multiple delay returns can also be quantized with a swing or shuffle
feel. Plus there is a harmonizer (!) that you may through into a delay
line to make each delay loop rise or stagger downwards. I like the
DelayDesigner because it does NOT try to copy the traditional tape
delay machine aesthetics but rather to come up with a sound design
tool optimized for laptop musicians working in the software domain.
Myself I tried to abuse the DelayDesigner as "a looper" but that was
not very successful ;-)
