Re: WAY OFF TOPIC: recommendations for great science fiction written in the last 10 years?

I haven't read any other Neal Stephenson, though I've been meaning to.
My review of Snow Crash was that the first couple chapters were
brilliant but the rest of the book didn't sustain that quality.

I used to be heavily into SF, but haven't read much in years.

Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials is fantasy rather than SF, but I
would rate it as definitely worth reading.

Smilla's Sense of Snow has some SF-ish aspects though it's basically
more of a thriller.

My standard travel reading has been Michael Dibdin's Aurelio Zen
mysteries which have no SF content. Alas, Dibdin died recently.
