Thanks for the endorsement of the MOTU UL. I'm going to keep it in mind, 
but it turns out the UL is discontinued. I'm trawling at ebay and have an 
eye out for one there.

I've been looking at what Echo offers now. Lots of positive comments about 
the AudioFire, and the AudioFire 8 looks to be available in my price 
range, albeit at the top end. I've always felt good about Echo. Th eTC 
Konnekt24 gets a look too.

Hal,
I choose the Motu Ultralight because of its portability and the rich
feature set. I have used it for more than a year now with Logic 9 and
Mainstage 2. It's very stable, no hickups. Regarding its sound, really
good I would say considering the concept of the Ultralite.
