I must disagree with you Andy regarding palying techniques with the stick. 
I play a ten string graphite, I am certainly not a virtuoso as the voice 
and composition are my main focus. On the other hand as a composer and 
oneman band I am interested in tone, texture, etc... There are a lot of 
sounds you can get from that instrument. Most players are focused on the 
two handed  virtuosity aspect so other aspects of the instrument are not 
brought to light. 
Uless of course I have misunderstood the meaning of your comment

?
...but that's possible with most guitar related (and ancestor)
instruments.
Downside with the stick is that the range of tones to be got
by varying the playing technique is (...a quick count..)
.....one. Maybe not an issue, but for me it takes away
about 90% of the music.
