Re: Free Jazz/Avant Guard...

I may be out of bounds a bit but Vernon Reid's solo albums are great and they are essentially trios +keys.

Subject: Free Jazz/Avant Guard...

krispen-
my knowledge of jazz stuff is very limited. and these aren't straight gtr, bass, drums....but what i know that's close:

-there is the scofield loop album-that has a band w/ it, came out a few yrs ago. it's decent, he uses an boss rc20 for looping in it (uberjam)
-any of nels cline singers discs are good-i'm not sure how i'd categorize them, honestly. but he uses gtr-drums-bass...
-one of my fave discs of late is the david torn "prezens" disc-that's gtr, drums, horn, keyboards (& electronics)-but i love that disc (there are youtube clips too, dt usually says they're pretty limited in audio content, but i like them for sound reference)
-there is also the polytown disc, dt w/ bozzio and mick karn, trio improv from early 90s-also a great disc-
dt also played on marty fogel's "many heads a bobbin" & lonely universe- are band projects that he contributed guitar too. they are good i think. and there is also his 'cloud about mercury' dics w/ a band
oh, and the BLUE disc and the live disc from that-are excellent -i love the live disc-it's bruford and levin, and dt and crhis botti plays trumpet.

there is also:
the henry kaiser "plane crash" power trio-it's not really jazz, more improv, experimental. but it's good. HK probably has a few other band project discs, but i'm
drawing a blank sitting here....

oh, michael "nemoguitar" klobuchar has an old band called "Klutter" -it was a gtr bass drums improv group he did, i have 2 or 3 discs of it. of things recorded to 4-track. some interesting band interaction on it, again-i'm not sure if it's "jazz" more outthere improv/experimental. maybe he can comment on it.....

oh, the live frisell east/west double disc it hink is straight guitar/bass/drums. it's good. he does some loop things, oh and his other live disc from the 90s ("Live") is good.
i just realized i have a scary amt of bill frisell discs...most are good (unspeakable, good dog happy man, intercontinentals, frisell motian carter, bf w/ holland & jones)
do you have his "power tools" disc-w/ ronald shannon jackson and melvin gibbs-from back in '87-i had this on album, it was actually REVIEWED in rolling stone back in 80s -how i heard about it. it's also good. and i know that there are some live discs from this band, but the guitarist pete cosey fills in for frisell-i've always been curious about it.

another disc i had back in the 90s. sonny sharrocks "ask the ages", it was a trio w/ pharoah saunders on horn on a few cuts-i think it's out there. i sadly got rid of this yrs ago, and wish i still had it. copies of it now are kind of pricey, and i've not wanted to plunk down the $$ for it....

these are the ones off the top of my head (& my very limited knowledge....)
