Pitch is selectable by turning reg-pre.
While each pitch will be output at the same voltage,
some will *sound* louder than others.

What you're looking for is whether the sine is distorted.

Whether o/p appears at both outputs depends on how you plug in
to the outputs, as those have switches.
...and those switches aren't reliable.
To be sure you need to be plugged in to *both* outputs all the time.

There isn't enough info here to know whether the o/p is
fried or not.

Nope, you can't upgrade the memory.
The 8 second Vortex has been a Holy Grail of LDer's since
ancient days, and the possibility has been considered a
number of times. Even if the upgrade replacement worked, there would be
no way to get the Vortex to actually use the extra time.

actually, the cheap little multitesters (?like the one you already had?)
are better in some ways,
they respond much faster.

You're obviously really interested in the "how it works" part
of this.
With patience, and a certain pedantic approach you'll
be able to pin the fault down much better.

Might be worth checking connections of the Input Pot.

good luck
