This was also possible since "day one" (I only started to use Live w/ 
version 4, but I believe it was also possible in earlier versions) using 
any looper (hardware or software) that would create a MIDI clock and 
issue a MIDI start command and syncing Live to that.
In the software domain, I have been doing that successfully since about 
2005 (or 2006?) using Möbius. What you need here, however, is to route 
Möbius' MIDI output to Live, which is best accomplished using a software 
MIDI patch cable such as MIDIYoke or LoopBe.
