The hardest challenge is in the mid range frequency band. When
blending guitar and fat synths you usually get a better result if
cutting away then if adding EQ. The "awesome guitar sound" that you
create when being on your own and plugging into an amp rarely works in
an ensemble situation since it tends to be too fat (just doesn't leave
enough space for the other stuff and doesn't cut through well either).
Finally, playing ridiculously tight and articulated can be good; it
might sound stiff if listening only to the guitar (or synth) but in
the mix it usually works better also "sound-wise".
