A small addition.
Yes, we did use another setup when playing with our live-looping combo a 
few years back (some of the rare photos I was able to find where we could 
see the hardware setup):

Two live-loopers using laptops (using with live audio feed in from the 
others, sound generators, miscellaneous instruments, objects, microphones, 
... using loads of weird apps for audio and video). One guitarist with 
loads of pedals and effects, and an RC50. Same for the bassist (me..).
Fun times... ;)
