This sequencer piece has been evolving for a few months now
in the URM studio and is the result of experimenting with the
Nova 3 VST generative sequencer and I'm a bit sad to have it
leave the regular playing rotation of the development cycle.
For some reason this piece really chills me out so working on
it has been a strangely therapeutic process. Tense, anxious
or just out of sorts, playing this would somehow centre and
relax me which often made it difficult to stay focused on
the work.
It was also a hard beast to trap as the synths' modulations
along with the sequencers' grid based generative process
sometimes just weren't feeling it and producing that magic.
Tamed the beast a bit by syncing the synths' modulators and by
finding a good starting point in the sequencer grids, but it still
took a number of takes before the machines got the feel right.
Warning: Tech talk for all you studio, synth and sequencer geeks
out there. As usual, this piece began in Bidule with a batch of
soft synths (4 Korg MonoPolys, 1 Moog Modular V, 1 Obxd and
1 Tal Bassline 101) each being sequenced by its own uniquely
programmed Nova 3 generative sequencer. The drums and
percussion were programmed in and played by Jamstix.
Recorded in Bidule, mixed, edited and mastered in Reaper
with Ozone and gobs of Lexicon and Wizooverb reverb
sprinkled on most everything.
This is the fourth in a series of URM studio explorations to be
released to the PiNG LiST in 2014. Get them while you can as
a fresh piece will be uploaded soon. Don't worry if you miss
any of them as they will later be collected together into an LP
which will also include 5.1 surround sound versions.
