Re: Overview of iPad midi please?

The only way I know of to get MIDI out of iPad is via USB. With the CCK the USB jack will be on the iPad end and the standard MIDI 5 pin DIN is on the other end going to your hardware.
I can't remember the highest OS version that iPad 1 can use.

Go to Amazon and search for USB midi and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks, I have head of the Apple camera connection kit of which you speak. Bare in mind, I need MIDI sockets, not usb anything, there no usb on my orange box. CAn I get good old fashioned common or garden midi, without a data machine in the loop?
OH and AFAIK, my iPad is up to as date as it can be, but I believe it will now no longer go any further... so it aint totally UP to date, if you see what I mean?

You can use any class compliant USB MIDI interface with iPad but you will need the Apple camera connection kit (CCK) to give you a USB connection from the iPad and you need the older CCK with the 30 pin connector since you have iPad 1. You can probably find that online or ebay cheaply.
I use an M Audio Uno USB cable but I've heard the cheap USB midi cables  from Amazon work too.  I'm not familiar with the Touch Osc app but it should see your USB midi connection.
If you haven't already done this and if you still can I would update your iPad to the newest OS version.

Your mileage may vary.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

I had been using my iPad (very old iPad1) a while back with a custom TouchOSC layout I had made for my edps and repeater.
I stopped doing it a year or so ago, when we discovered my wife was electrosensetive and couldnt stand WiFi, and I was using the very excellent "missing Link" which now seems to be defunct)

Anyway. Id now like to bring it out of hiding and not only use it again for looping, but Ive been working on a layout for my Roland D2 groovebox, which has become (quite surprisingly for me) one of my favourite bits of kit, despite being orange...

So now Im wondering about the midi thing.. what can I do hardware wise to get my iPad sending good old regular midi.
In the TouchOSC authoring tool, I was before making OSC commands to send to the Missing Link, that needed OSC. I was using the tool that was before at Jrárbrudian Industries, but thats down now.. (oh wait... its here... http://www.xmlizer.net/hansLindauer/midiapp.html)

But if I can get my iPad talking via a cable (using a dock or something,) then surely then I can just enter normal midi commands, instead of using OSC?
Right?

I realise Im rambling so I summarise.

1, Can I get midi out of an iPad1
2, Can I use midi commands in my TouchOSC set up,instead of OSC then?

Oh and before anyone asks.. NO THERE IS NO /NEVER... ANY COMPUTER IN MY SET-UP!
Im a HARD hard-ware guy!
