Coltrane is so brilliant.  Can't go wrong with that.
My fave is A Love Supreme.
And you know, Lars, the drummer from Metallica, it is suspected, got his drum style from listening to jazz bands that would come to his father's club. 
If you listen to his drumming, it almost sounds like horn lines.
So your son is definitely doing the right thing to expand his imagination. 
To me, that's what it's all about!!!

That's true, Richard. In that department I've actually experienced
some fun YouTube all-nighters together with one of my sons, that
demanded I should walk him through the late music history; leading up
to his current state as a double-kick-drum-metal-maniac-drummer. That
was a lot of fun. He really loved Kulu Se Mama with John Coltrane and
Pharoah Sanders right on the spot at the very first listening.
