Echoplex dilemma

OK so I purchased my Echoplex brand spankin' new in Aug 98. Everything has 
been going great until the other day when I went to play my guitar and my 
whole sound was low--so I isolated my echoplex--when I played through it 
my 
signal was low and had a whispy distortion sound, yet when I recorded a 
loop-it was clean as a whistle!  Even if I turn both the in/out knob all 
the 
way up (which I never used to or else my fender would blow me away) it 
still 
was not loud =(   My warrantee is up and I really do not want to ship it 
to 
CA for 4-5 weeks....and no it is not the cord! And it has not been moved 
for 
about 1 year....
Any suggestions oh loop gods?????????????????
