another dumbass PC question

You were all so helpful with the last stupid question I put to you...

I want to run my amp into my soundcard so I can turn some of my guitar
sounds into WAV files.  I tried running a 1/4" cord into the back of the 
PC,
and it worked but was so quiet that I had to turn every volume knob in 
sight
all the way up to hear anything, and it still wasn't much.  Am I missing
something?
