Most of the time you can't, although I hear that some kareoke machines can remove the vocal tracks from CD's, I don't think you could take a CD or record and get just one instrument out of it. The secret is to find a spot on the CD or record when the instrument you want to sample is playing solo. It is conceiveable that, with the right computer software, you could get the computer to identify all the frequencies of "a bass line" and subtract it note for note from a recording. I haven't heard of or seen software that does that, but I imagine that if it exists, that it would be pretty expensive and complex to use.
