Me and my friends decided a while ago that to avoid just this kind of 
embarrassment, all collective nouns would now become the same...a bunch.

That's:
a bunch of cows
a bunch of birds
a bunch of hippopotami
a bunch of flock of seagulls (talking about great band names...:  )

etc.
