Paul- The gates are open as a gate effect of the midi pattern. Gate time is controllable. Two separate channels (mono in, stereo out) per pattern. The effects can work on external sounds just like they do with internal ones. Also a channel of global "accent" to play with. The ER-1 should do the cutting you want with the turntable, with the typical problem of tap tempo-ing not being as accurate over time as midiclock...
