Java 1.4 is still in Beta... I'd be careful were I you.

javax.sound.midi is included in 1.3, anyway!

I think very little has changed between 1.3 and 1.4 so you should
be safe using this.

(NB: If you are on Mac OS 9.x, you can only get Java 1.1 so you
are out of luck....)
