Not to be a stickler but you wrote:

I believe this is an open D tuning and NOT a tuning in fifths.    Tuning in
fifths would be   d-a-e-c wouldn't it?

I know that in western classical music the violin IS tuned in fifths.   Is
the fifths tuning correct for indian music or is it
d-a-d-a?
