That's how I do it with my two Tandberg 9100X machines. Sure, the sound may not be as "clean" as a pair of Revoxes, and may decay faster but it still works - and at a fraction of the price! Hell, I've even had acceptable (for the purpose) results using a cheap portable machine for playback. If you have no expectations for the results then the possibility for pleasant surprises is greater.
