I've heard good things about both the Hammerfall devices and the MOTU 
stuff,
but I think you're wrong about the Hammerfall being cheaper. E.g. at
audiomidi.com:
MOTU 828 - $699
Hammerfall DSP cardbus+multiface - $1040
