My personal experience has been that digests waste more of my time than receiving single e-mails. The way I manage it is to create a filter for each list I belong to. Then everything gets segregated into individual mailboxes, and the messages are all individually listed. If I want to follow a particular thread I simply sort the mailbox by Subject line and page my way through the messages.
