I've had that problem when I'm performing in an art gallery or less formal 
performance environment.  The way I try to avoid it now is to make my 
little part of whatever space I'm performing to at least seem more like a 
stage to discourage that.  It doesn't always work, so if that happens I 
usually say something like "I'm busy now, can I talk to you when I'm 
done?"  Not sure what else one could do.
