Hands-on lecture/workshop on microtonal instruments

In conjunction with her performance titled "New Tunings for New Instruments" on the Musical Explorations series at REDCAT, composer/instrument builder Gayle Young will demonstrate her instruments and discuss her work in an informal gathering sponsored by acf/LA.

GAYLE YOUNG (b. 1950) is a composer, author and inventor of musical instruments and notational systems. In the tradition of Harry Partch, the great California champion of alternative tuning systems, Young designs and builds her own instruments. These include the Columbine, a metallophone using 23 pitches per octave in an expanded Just Intonation tuning system, and the Amaranth, a 24-string instrument with a moveable bridge system that allows it to be tuned to any set of pitches.

Young is also an important contributor to contemporary music through her publications. She is  the author of The Sackbut Blues (1989), a biography of Hugh Le Caine, the foremost Canadian inventor of electronic instruments. and is the editor of Musicworks Magazine, journal of Sound Exploration.

In her May 12 concert at REDCAT, Young will play, among other works, Study In Eleven Over Nine for Amaranth and pre-recorded sound; In Motion for Columbine with pre-recorded tape, based on simple intervals in Just Intonation taken out of a tonal context; and Moving From My Sight for Columbine and four hands, based on sum and difference tones within the tuning system of the instrument.
