I have a really good one for mono recordings, like vocals or sax. It's PreSonus VXP with a good built in compression and gate/expander (inexpensive second hand buy). It brings out the best sound of my mic, a AKG C414 B-TL 2. However, the best thing with the PreSonus mic pre-amp is not the sound quality, it's the compression that makes the musician sing/play more expressive.
