This week is a treat for those who appreciate old-school,
Berlin-style electronic music with huge modular synthesizers
and a stage full of gadgetry and blinking lights. Enjoy!

This Wed. April 6th - Söftware with Toastybird Visuals

Join Söftware in an evening of electronic music and
exhilarating video performance. Influenced by European
progressive electronic rock, jazz, folk and classical,
Söftware weaves a sonic tapestry in their own style of
improvisation. Sometimes ambient, sometimes not,
always spontaneous and captivating to watch - sequencers
scanning, minimoogs screaming, guitar strings vibrating
and Toastybird Visuals providing live video projections.
Söftware will have CDs and DVDs of their October 12th,
2004 PiNG concert available as a doorcharge option.
Check out the Söftware website for more information,

||: IN THE LOOP :|| by Luna Tek

March fulfilled its promise in 2005 by ending like a lamb: on a
mild, windy Wednesday night, The Canadian Electronic Ensemble
played for one of the PiNG's best crowds in recent memory,
an audience seemingly invigorated by the promise of spring
just around the corner.

Larry Lake, Rose Bolton and Michael Dobinson opened the
evening with Kyoto Bells (Smog in February), a piece composed
by Dobinson. Jim Montgomery and Dave Jaeger joined the group
later in the set for an improvisation as visually evocative as any
art installation I've ever experienced. The listener was challenged
to move beyond the realm of simple (passive) listening to engage
in new sonic dimensions via various juxtapositions of dissonant
and found sound.

The second set featured a charming Celtic piece that was a
particular hit with Luna. As the piece developed, the music
explored the mystery that is Celtic lore by conveying the
feeling of an underwater journey that was more adventurous
than sinister.

Between sets, PiNG-goers experienced "NuuK" by multimedia
artist Thomas Köner - a 1995 album of gongs, electronics and
treatments. Köner currently has a small music/video installation
mounted at Gallery 44's Centre for Contemporary Photography
(401 Richmond St W, #120). The installation runs until April 16.

More information about this evening's artists is available at:

rik maclean's *ping things* CD Reviews

"Angelmark" by Angelmark

Angelmark is a solo project by Michael Turner of Titania
showcasing Turner's instrumental talents. Largely based
around his impressive guitar playing skills, with this release
Turner has created a stunning work of melancholy beauty
and atmospheric ambience that brings to mind the more
meditative side of the shoegazer genre.

The entire disc is filled with elegant and charming work.
Beautiful layered guitar plays overtop a subtle wash of
synth pads and evolving tones. Clean acoustic guitar is
paired with effected electric in such a way as to allow
both to weave around themselves, with subtle melodies
intertwining and complimenting each other. Themes and
phrases drift through the soundfield, circling around the
listener to create a delicate nocturnal world filled with
beauty and perfection. Phrases and tones slowly shift
and evolve in hypnotic patterns. Occasional keyboard
melodies add atmosphere and depth to the tracks.

Without doubt, "Angelmark" is a captivating and engaging
release by a true talent who understands the beauty of the
guitar's sound. Fans of Michael's work with Titania will no
doubt be impressed by this disc, as will others who
appreciate chilled ambient guitar work.
