OT: Disc recovery software

Oh Benevolent Loop people,

This is OT but if anyone is likely to have an opinion on this, I figured
it would you all.

So I installed another hardrive (200gb) into my computer and transferred
all my photos and music files (6 years or recording) and it was good. 
Then suddenly, the drive  got flagged by Windows XP as dirty and
autocheck ran on the drive and told me it had fixed a number of orphaned
files.  Then it froze and did no more.  Now, so long as the drive is
connected to the system I cannot start my computer without getting
frozen in the autocheck.  

So now I figure I need a 3rd party utility to try and recover these
files.  And this is where I come to you to ask if you have any
recommendations for a good software recovery options.
