Variax? (was:Re: Sitars)

I've always thought it might be nice to have the
Variax, just for the odd stuff it does, but I heard
too many reports that it seemed like a very cheap
Chinese guitar with some cool electronics.  Has the
quality improved on these, or do they still lean on
the emulation instead of making a great guitar with
cool emulation.
