Rest and Peace to You Dr. Z
Yikes!
To many on this list (myself included, certainly) the appearance of a message from
zvonar@zvonar.com was always an indication that a particular message (or thread)
was seriously worth checking out -- or had suddenly earned my attention if it
had now somehow merited Richard's.
I hate to admit it, but I don't read every message on the LD list. I look at subjects and
the names of the particular posters to help weed out the meat from the muck. When
Dr. Z would post I would always check out what he had to say. It was always informative,
erudite and pertinent. And, often I would backtrack through a thread I'd previously
skipped to catch up on what I'd missed simply because he had picked it up.
My first face-to-face encounter with him was at the first Loopstock in San Luis Obispo.
Man, oh man! He could coax more musical noise out of a couple of CD players and an
Eventide (or two) than whole armies of guitar-slinging putzes like me. It was stand-up,
sit-down jaw-dropping amazing! He made glorious amounts of noise at each appearance
at Y2K shows as well.
Walking around, chatting with him, or having lunch at NAMMs, or between sets at Y2K2
through Y2K4 and at those looper "brunches" at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz made me
really appreciate the man ever so much more. Besides having a gigantic intellect and
wide-ranging knowledge and curiosity about things, He had a great sense of humor.
He was kind. And, most surprising of all . . . humble.
The very idea that we've had our last post from Dr. Richard Zvonar, PhD. is almost too
sad to bear. I knew he was sick (and had been for asome time). But his departure comes
as such a sudden shock. He's gone.
Richard you are . . . and will continue to be . . . missed. May your character and many varied
accomplishments earn the praised they deserve and may your passing be much mourned.
And, may we also take from it inspiration to seize every oppeortunity life presents us.
In the words of the also recently departed Waren Zevon: "Enjoy every sandwich."
Best regards,
