Seems crazy to me to even think about puting any significant amount of processing between guitar and preamp. A wah pedal and maybe an EQ is as much as I can contemplate there. I've been playing over 20 years, and have used racked processors of one sort or another for most of that time, but it is natural to me that any time-based processor shoudl be fd a signal that is as complete as possible. But I completely agree with you that it's a conundrum trying to incorporate the sound of the amp itself since it's the last part of the chain.
