Truly, the sprit of Steve Hillage is upon thee !

He's been exciting the strings on his instrument with
"neck massagers" for years. He has different types,
and reckons he gets different tones from the various
models. There are probably Google-able interviews with
him about this.

Whatever turns you on, I suppose. Wonder if he can
write them off as tax deductable ?
