RE: tapedelay records motor buzz

Title: RE: tapedelay records motor buzz

>>now left is one artifarct, the motor buzz, which seems to get recorded on
the tape, even when running the unit without any input signal. can this be
caused by the dried out pinch roller?<<

damn, you've got a project on y'r hands there- whole lot of artefacts..... the hum is most likely due to the aging of various capacitors in the electronics, especially the larger ones in the power-supply smoothing/regulation. this tends to be somewhat rudimentary on these machines anyway.

do you know anyone locally who can work on the unit with you? I mean, someone (like me) who routinely pulls apart tape decks for their own amusement? that's the guy you want on this thing. the tape-curl & general bad handling will go away when you have a new pinch roller & the tape path is completely clean & true. if the tape curl is still happening with a new pinch roller then something is out of alignment. probably on a machine like this, re-adjustment will involve gently bending something rather than breaking out the hex keys.... :-)

I don't even know the HH unit- I wish I did- but I've worked on copicats, melos & roland stuff aswell as many many "regular" tapedecks. I have even done a mini frippertronics setup with two uher portables..... the quality of the tape stock &/or the bias & eq of the record deck makes a huge difference to the result. make sure you experiment with different tape stocks on the HH & avoid ampex stuff from the 80s. it is a world of pain.
