if you can really spend $450,  you might look into the Boss RC-50  
loopstation.
i had one for awhile and it is the godzilla of loop pedals, has  
midisync, is stereo, has multiple outs ,etc etc etc.
it would really be going overboard for christmas, but maybe you have  
a 'going overboard' kind of relationship...

the suggestion about getting your boy to spill his beans about his  
favorite gear is probably the best idea tho...
any gear head would gladly spend hours going down the list of gadgets  
their functions with his girl.
