I finally broke down and bought a Traynor TVM-10.  Battery powered, around 
15 watts, rechargeable, two inputs (one with a combo that takes XLR), plus 
RCA inputs.  Sounds pretty good, should be under $150.  No effects, but a 
4-band master EQ.
