I seem to remember some reportage about 3 or 4 years ago about  
finding that treating metal instruments with super-cooling using  
liquid nitrogen improved the tone quality. Might have been an NPR  
story. I did a quick Google search and nothing jumped out at me on  
the first page. Maybe it turned out to be too expensive a process for  
results that were too small to justify? Might improve uniformity.
