.ogg is open source, can play in Winamp, MediaPlayer, and a host of 
others, and according to lots of people besides myself, sounds 
better than an mp3 file at the same bit rate.

It's been around a long time. Try encoding something into .ogg 
format at 128K, then make an mp3 at the same bitrate. Listen 
especially to the highs.
