I've seen packed houses for harsh noise gigs, and more people listening- and applauding!- from the parking lot 'cause the stage volume was so dangerously loud. (I was one of those- only one set of ears ya know). The next night for a normal indie rock band, 6 people. Go Figure. Hard to tell if you suck or they suck or both when that happens (it's happened to me twice). More fun was the time we drove out everyone except the hard-core drunks (and the bar lady passed us a note about 20 minutes in threatening to cut the power), but the drunks told after us how much they liked it and bought us beers!
