Hi Jim.
Well, I’m kind of on-and-off-again
about MIDI guitar, but after playing a lot of purist
(i.e., no loops or fx other than tone stuff) jazz guitar this year, it’s
a pleasure to dive back into broader tonal waters. The classic Yamaha FM stuff
was pretty revolutionary at the time, but generally I really prefer
sample-based “synthesis” as in the GR-33 and many other newer sound
modules (when the TX81Z came out, there were some pretty severe computing
limits that have been greatly relaxed since then. FM was renowned to a
significant extent because it was a great efficient
method. Efficiency is less important today, though FM still has its
afficianados). Plus, my Godin nylon-string is a very good MIDI controller –
I don’t know if this is true of your Charvel, but this guitar was
designed to be a synth controller, and (I infer from performance) it shows up
in the quality (strength, fidelity, lack of crossover) of the hex signal sent
to the converter, which lets the converter do the best job it can.

All very visual Warren and good stuff, which is a strong suit of
Daryl's I've come to know from working with him the last year and now
in hearing more of you too, love the patches. I too have a dated
midi-guitar setup that I have done nothing with in many years. I got it
ahead of the technology as I was really interested in the mid-80's. It's
the Charvel/Jackson module with a hex pickup on a Japenese/Korean Strat clone.
Module wise I've used a TX81Z with it. Every year I briefly seem to get
it out and then move on. At NAMM in January I played with the Roland
Synth which I found interesting but for the money have been more driven to put
the investment in real instruments which I've done plus with Chinapainting as
you know we've been more to analog/real-time and minimal efx. That all
said your patches/voices on this tapestry of music with Daryl plus ones I
recall you using at the end of Y2K when I joined in with you and Daryl last Oct
are/were really cool.
About 20 years ago I was driving back home to Arkansas
from New Orleans, was lost it was about
mid-night in the bog lands of southern Louisiana,
August and hot, it was the old City before the deluge of last year and when it
was a very unique southern place. The energy of what you guys created
reminded me of that trip.

Thanks for the kind words, Jim. Louisiana swamp was not so far from the

Warren again it was so kind
of you to come to our first live-in-person Chinapainting
show in Brooklyn. Thanks so much for
making the trek down to Brooklyn.
