Yes, of course a preamp is best, but a simple mic-line transformer will do. I use one of these with the RC-2: http://www.zzounds.com/item--AUTCP8201 Beware going any cheaper than $10 or so, though, as you're probably just getting an adapter and not a transformer. Look for terms like "Lo-Z to Hi-Z". Just because the plug fits doesn't mean it'll work right.
