I did, too. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I choose to pay for tools/toys/etc. that I use, regardless of their form factor (software, hardware, music, movies, instruments). It's the same ethics that cause me to buy cars from dealers or individuals rather than hotwire them and drive them out of a parking ramp. So limiting...
Back to Qua's point, I too have not switched from PC to Mac for just that very reason: since I buy my tools, I have far too much invested in the PC platform. I don't use PCs for live looping (prefer the EDP at this point), but I do use PCs for: graphic design and typesetting (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark, Acrobat Professional), music engraving (SCORE, Sibelius), and recording (Sonar, Audiomulch, Acid, Sound Forge, Kontakt, Garritan Orchestral sample library).
That's multiple thousands of dollars of software to replace (and at least one program, SCORE, has no equal on any platform). So, I can spend $500-600 to build a newer, smokin' machine that still runs XP (most off-the-shelf PCs these days only come with some flavor of Vista) and still have access to all the software I've invested so much time and $$ into, or I can jump ship to a Mac (which I love, don't get me wrong--I spend all day at work using OS X (Quark, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.)) and spend $2k+ on a machine and then another $2k+ to replace the software.
Yes, I could install XP on an Intel-Mac, but why spend $2k+ for the machine and another $90 for XP just so I can spend most of my time using XP when I can build a system for 1/4 the cost? I love OS X, but it's not worth $1500 to me.
Heck, if I was interested in using a pc for live sound processing, I'd prolly be more inclined to either build a PC using one of the small Shuttle cases, or get a low-cost, moderately powered laptop and a Kyma system and the LoopConstructionKit. Then it doesn't matter what platform I'm on, the Kyma does all the heavy lifting and unless they've changed drastically over the years, they are rock-solid in stability.
For now, I'm happy with the EDP for live use, and the PC for home.
