I guess it depends on the size of the venue.  I've used the JBL 15"
EONS .  they're pretty straight forward and can handle the load.

Mackie SRM 350s are also pretty nice.  I've played with bass, guitar,
vox, and percs through these before and liked them.

In my travel rig I've been using a pair of Roland CM-30s as monitors.
I like em.  great bass response, but you have to use them in stereo or
things will get muddy.  probably get a pair for around 350 USD.
