Gee, I'm experimental and i thought the operational defn was simply "music no-one likes". or perhaps i have a different problem :-)
In the late 80s I bounced between two music stores in Pasadena, one the late great Poobah's (sigh!), the other a chain that changed names via company purchases several times.  Brian Eno's work used to be in the same place at Poobah's, but in the other more standard retail store, it moved quite a few times through the following categories:
 
"Experimental"
"Electronic"
"Soundtrack" (I kid you not, it was "Apollo" and "Dune" that moved ALL his stuff there)
"New Age"
"New Wave"
"Alternate Rock"
"Rock"
 
Can anyone else remember more of them?
