I don't think it is a "new trend" to use bad sound in recording. I'm pretty sure it just happens because people are not experienced enough or maybe don't have the patience to do it right, typically giving priorities to artistic performance work flow aspects in a tough situation. And like you, I have noticed that her recordings sound a bit crappy. I guess she would like them to sound better if it was possible, given the looper pedal based recording technique she seems to be using. I do like her music very much though, and this makes me like even here recordings.
