Subject: looping/live tracking what do you call it

Just a general question here……I am getting pretty good at building foundations for instrumental or vocal pieces, but don’t do a lot of just ambient type stuff where you just layer a bunch of noises together, but in my rack I have keys and organ and a good bass sound and drum samples to make a basic foundation that I can improve over with my acoustic instruments, but is that really looping per se? Not having heard a lot of what ya’ll do, I’m not really sure, am kind of operating in a vacuum.  So I guess here is the question,,,,what is looping? As long as you have no sequenced tracks, build I all live, is that still looping? (maybe it’s like opening a can of worms on a Bluegrass list with the question “what is Bluegrass anyway?”, I hope so, lol)
